Curtain and drapery hardware is as varied as the window treatments themselves. A double rod -- two rods that run parallel to each other with several inches between them -- lets you hang two set of window treatments that can function separately.

You calculate curtain length with double curtain rods the same way you calculate the length for single curtain rods, measuring from where you’ll install the rods to where you want the curtains to fall. Floor-length curtains should be flush against the floor, while sill-length curtains should end one or two inches below the bottom of the sill. Measure the width of your window and the height of the window, from the top to the floor if you want a long curtain, or to the sill, if you want a sill curtain. Account for any crown molding or frame, like a casement, when measuring the width of the window. Determine the best height above the window frames for your rods and add this measurement to your window measurements. Where you mount your rods can change the feel of a room. You can create a classic look by installing rods about four inches above the window, add drama to your room by adding 6 to 8 inches to the length of curtains so that they puddle beneath the window or add the illusion of height to your room by mounting the rods near the ceiling above the windows.

Account for rod placement in your measurements for curtain length. For example, if the distance between the top of the window and the floor is 75 inches, and you plan to install the rods four inches above the window, then you would need fabric that is 79 inches long, if you plan to hang floor-length curtains. Remember that the top rod is usually about two inches higher than the bottom rod, so account for those two inches when buying the curtains that will hang from the top rod. Decide how many curtain panels you want to buy. Hanging at least two panels gives you the option of pulling them back to let in some light. Also decide if you plan to hang something sheer beneath something heavier, which is common when using double rods. Choose your curtains before installing your double curtain rods, since the weight and color of the material influences the rods you buy. For example, the heavier the curtain fabric, the heavier and thicker the rod should be. Use your window measurements when selecting your curtains.

Choose rods that stick out no less than two inches on either side of the window and no more than 10 to 15 inches on either side of the window, once installed. The “bottom” rod, or the rod from which you plan to hang a sheer curtain, should be between 3 and 4 inches shorter than the top rod, effectively hiding it. Dress up the ends of the outer curtain rods with ornate and colorful finials or caps. Hang the bottom curtain before hanging the top curtain. You may want to add curtain hooks on either side of the window to allow you to easily pull back one or both curtains. Very good quality and gorgeous color. Arrived safely with all pieces intact. I needed the longer rod because my window is 76" wide plus I wanted my curtains to hang outside the window frame. One of the small finials had a piece chipped off of it (so I hid it in the back, facing the wall) without the broken piece in the wrapping. Arrived floating free in the box. Were so badly dented that they would not 'telescope'. But 2 BIG issues:1. the transition of pieces at the extension points present a large lip that catches your curtain rings EVERY TIME! However, one of the decorative ends was broken and I glued it to avoid having to wait.
