SPCA Certified is an innovative farm certification and food-labelling program dedicated to improving farm animal welfare standards in Canada. Sumas Mountain Farms is a certified organic farm located in Abbotsford, B.C. on Sumas Mountain. This family owned and operated farm is home to beef cattle, laying hens, broiler (meat) chickens, pigs and turkeys. Co-owner, Trevor Newton, is a former animal activist-turned-farmer who did so in order to initiate positive change within the farming industry. In an interview, Trevor candidly shares what he learned about farming by starting out as a farm animal activist.

Read the full interview (PDF) Sumas Mountain Farms co-owner, Trevor Newton, explains how farm animals are meant to live, and what we, as consumers, owe them. In 2010, the Newton family applied for SPCA certification for their Hereford cattle herd. The cattle not only gained SPCA certification, but are also certified under the Organic Standards of Canada. The Newtons raise their beef cattle in a way that is both environmentally friendly and animal-welfare conscious. The cattle are grass fed and finished to ensure healthy development and growth, and to encourage good rumen health. They are pastured all year round on an extensive acreage, and are able to seek refuge at free will either in the barn or in the forest. The pasture is grazed on a rotational grazing system that promotes sustainability and microbial health. Sumas Mountain Farms does not practice branding, castration or dehorning. The cattle are monitored daily to ensure their health needs and quality of life are optimized.

In 2013, Sumas Mountain Farms certified their Tamworth heritage breed pigs. The Newtons describe them as "remarkable and fascinating creatures". "The pigs dig and dig all day long, and to them, that's blissful! They also love being in contact with the earth; they are intensely curious creatures." When pigs are allowed to be pigs, they turn over soil like a plow, all the while adding rich manure back into the earth. At Sumas Mountain Farms, piglets are not subjected to having their teeth clipped or their tails docked, and males are not castrated. Piglets are also weaned naturally. These pasture-raised pigs make a wonderful contribution to the farm. In 2014, Sumas Mountain Farms added broiler chickens and egg-laying hens to their SPCA certification. Sumas Mountain Farms' chickens are 100% soy-free and organic. Soy products are increasingly controversial among experts, some saying soy is unhealthy while others approve of the use of soy. Rather than enter the debate, the Newtons chose to produce a soy-free chicken for customers wishing to avoid soy.
