THEY spend their days cornering criminals or hunting for contraband.But East Yorkshire police dogs have taken time out from their normal routine to warn animal lovers about a stressful evening ahead.The animals are giving daily tips on Facebook and Twitter to help families look after their pets on Bonfire Night.Sergeant Martin Hopper has been posting pictures of the dogs and the tips they are offering pet owners. We've got a lot of dog lovers who follow us and they don't just want to know what the dogs are doing – they want pictures and all sorts," he said."Our police dogs all behave differently on Bonfire Night."Some look at the lights and wonder what's going on, some just stay in the kennels."The force has 18 German shepherds and 14 specialist dogs, mostly labradors and spaniels, which are used for bomb and drug detection.They develop a close relationship with their handlers and many go on to live with them after retirement."My dog depends on me to look after him and I depend on him to save my life at times," Sgt Hopper said.I spend more time with my dog than my wife and kids. He's like one of the family."All police dogs are unique – no two dogs are the same. They all live at home with their handlers."Other members of the team have also shared tips in the past five days.Bailey the spaniel warned owners to let their dogs hide if it helped them stay calm."I like to go lie under the table, and Dad leaves me there," he said."
It's because I feel much safer hiding away on my own."Cindy, another spaniel, is a bit more adventurous but still afraid of the noise."Look at those pretty lights," she said. "I have asked my dad to buy me fireworks that don't have the loud bangs. We monitor our females during delivery and are right there from the very start of each puppy's life. We give the puppies play time in our puppy play room beginning at 5 weeks of age. They are well socialized with children and adults. They are loved on and well cared for from the minute they are born. We have a wonderful staff that also works with our dogs and puppies right along with our family. One of our employees is a self taught groomer. She does an amazing job with our dogs and grooms them all once a month.
