Since January, tyre makers including J K, Ceat, Apollo and Birla Tyre have revised their prices up to three times. However, no price revisions have taken place in the OEM segment. This is the for the first time in almost two years that tyre companies have resorted to hike in MRP. Earlier seasonal increases in demand had resulted in withdrawal of discounts on MRP. Attributing a part of the hike in tyre prices to increases in the prices of raw materials like natural rubber, carbon black and nylon tyre cord in the international market, tyre executives concedes that a good demand during the first half of the 2002 has helped a lot. Says Mr T K Banerjee, marketing director, J K Tyres, which revised its MRP on July 1, "No doubt good demand during last six months has had a positive impact on tyre prices."
